Kedarkantha Trek — Premium
The best peak to attempt and summit for beginners, with breathtaking views
Overview
The base camp is Sankri, where the trek begins; the maximum altitude reached is 12,500 ft at the Kedarkantha peak. It's an easy-to-moderate trek whose difficulty depends on the season — autumn and summer are ideal for beginners, while winter is more challenging. It's a 6-day trek with short distances between campsites but 23 km total. Day 1: 4 hours / 5 km. Day 2: 2 hours / 2 km. Day 3: 6 hours / 6 km. Day 4: 5 hours / 5-6 km. About 6,000 ft of altitude is gained from the start; the climb is steady for the first three days and only gets challenging at the summit, with a steady descent to finish.
Highlights & attractions
The views on the Kedarkantha Trek in Uttarakhand (max altitude 12,500 ft) stick with you for life — some of the most remote places in India with the clearest views of snow-capped peaks, frozen ponds and verdant valleys. Campsites sit amongst pine trees and babbling brooks. Juda Ka Talab, a semi-frozen lake, is a highlight — one of the best snow-trekking destinations in India, wrapped in the lore of the Pandavas and Shiva, with temples accessible along the trek. The drive from Dehradun to Sankri, past Mussoorie, Naitwar, Nowgaon, Mori and Purola, is one of the best you'll find through the Himalayas.

Safety & precautions
The Kedarkantha Trek is very safe — well-marked trails, well-trodden routes, well-placed campsites, multiple exit points, and gradual ascents. The only tricky bit is the climb to the summit, which is do-able with steady footing at a gradual pace. Hydrate regularly, don't overexert, rest when required, carry a first-aid box and ensure your equipment is in good condition before starting.
